Past and Present Projects
Save the Wally
When talks to develop a multi-pad arena off the 401 and Gardiner's Rd (now the Invista Centre) began, recommendations included closing three older rinks throughout the city: Cook Brother's Arena, Harold Harvey Area, and the Wally Elmer Centre. Passionate residents and service providers in the area who did not want to see this valuable part of the community close, rallied to keep the Wally Elmer Centre open. A petition was circulated to keep to centre opened, highlighting its value to all ages in the community.
For approximately 8 years, CRNC collaborated with the community and attended meetings, prepared written submissions and made public presentations with a goal to “Save the Wally”. The Wally Elmer Centre has since become a community hub offering programs and activities year round.
Note: The Rideau Heights Regeneration Project will introduce a new community centre to replace the current Wally. CRNC is actively involved in this project, to be sure that the voices and opinions of north end residents are being considered.
