Community Kitchens

Loving Spoonful’s Community Kitchen programs convene people around good food. Children, families and adults learn healthy food skills and build community. They also tackle some of life's most difficult problems including mental illness, social isolation, street involvement and poverty. As you know, good food brings people together, so building programming around good food is only common sense. We collaborate with partners across the City to ensure our programs are dynamic and tailored to the unique needs of our community. Please see below for full details and program descriptions, as well as way to get involved.

Open Kitchen

Open Kitchen is a fun, delicious, and healthy drop-in cooking workshop. Participants learn how to cook on a budget, try new recipes and experiment with fresh ingredients. Classes feature cross-cultural cooking, cooking with local doctors, and seasonal cooking. Classes take place every Wednesday from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm at Rideau Heights Community Centre (85 MacCauley St.). Come by and see what we're making this week! Please note, Open Kitchen will not be running in August 2019 to allow for Cooking with Families.

Circles Kingston: Building Community Around the Table

Weekly gatherings around meals build community across class lines. Learn food skills and support others experiencing poverty working toward self-sufficiency.The root of food insecurity is a lack of income, not a lack of food. Loving Spoonful is thrilled to be working in partnership with Kingston Community Health Centres (KCHC) and the City of Kingston to run the proven poverty reduction program Circles®. Poverty reduction program that builds relationships across class lines to empower families and communities to thrive.

Cooking in the Nest

Kingston Indigenous Languages Nest and Loving Spoonful will bring our strengths together in 2019 to create a year of Indigenous language learning for all ages around good food. Participants will cook together bi-weekly and learn Anishnaabemowin, Mohawk and Cree in a judgement-free space to rebuild language, culture and identity. This includes four seasonal land-based trips that celebrate food. This program is made possible by the support of the Community Foundation for Kingston & Area www.cfka.org

Take on the World

Loving Spoonful has partnered with the Katarokwi Learning Centre to provide a year of International and Indigenous food workshops to youth at the Katarokwi Learning Centre. Great cooks from different cultures will combat stereotypes about their cultures while teaching youth how to cook delicious, affordable meals from around the world. Students will participate in International & Indigenous programs which include field trips to commercial kitchens to learn about working in the food industry or land-based field trips to learn about sweetwater, wild ricing, fishing, etc. based on the skills of the indigenous knowledge holders. All students will learn how to cook healthy, affordable meals, learn about barriers to good food & income, and be invited to join in advocacy to improve social structures.
